Journal Writing Assignment: 6^th-8^th graders

Content Area: Bible

Topic: Hope

Due: Wednesday, March 7^th, 2018
(Benchmarks due on Feb 21 and Feb 28 - 5 entries and one post and response online)

Using the link to the “Hope” Bible verses, each student will need to choose 15 verses and respond in an academic journal. Write the chosen Bible verse on each response. Use this rubric for journal and responses.

We will use three different techniques in our academic journals:

1)     5double entries 

2)     5 Learning logs

3)     5response entries - 

Student will use this website article to help understand the purpose and reasons of keeping a journal.

Integrated information and communication technologies:

Each student will choose three of their journal entries to put on the class blog. Part of the assignment will also be to provide a hyperlink to an image that they feel best reflects their Bible text reflection. They will then need to write a 50-word comment on a minimum of five classmate’s reflections. I will use the ISTE standards to ensure the future success of my students in a technological world.  “Today’s students must be prepared to thrive in a constantly evolving technological landscape. The ISTE Standards for Students are designed to empower student voice and ensure that learning is a student-driven process” (iste.org).  Blogging can not just be an added activity but an excellent learning tool.  “Blogging is seen as a process that documents learning over time, creates a global communication hub, and supports the learner’s meta-cognition and reflective practices. No matter if you have a classroom blog or individual student blogs, use the blog to document learning, reflect on learning, share learning and amplify learning. Make blogging a tool how you accomplish these goals” (Tolisano, 2017).

Valentine's Day Party at Pueblo Rescue Mission

A day of chocolate, cards,  and reminders of love is not a gift the homeless often receive. But today the Daystar Christian School had a fantastic time giving the guests of the Pueblo Rescue Mission in Pueblo, Colorado, a Valentine's Day party. They brought decorations, homemade cards, sweet treats, and new socks. Angelo's Pizza also donated some of their famous pizza. 

The guests were very touched. One guest cried when she saw a card that said she was loved, "I will keep this card to remind me that someone loves me." Many of the guests were very thankful that the students sat down and talked to them and helped make their Valentine's Day a little sweeter.

The gift of love went both ways, "Seeing their smiling faces made me smile," said Luke Velbis, 7th grader.

"Today the children from Daystar demonstrated love and kindness for people who are treated so unkind almost everywhere they go," said Jackie Jaramillo, President and CEO of the Pueblo Rescue Mission. "All of the gifts were deeply appreciated by all of our guests. It was such a blessing to witness an event that brought joy and smiles to the faces of our guests. Thank you (Daystar) for this beautiful act of kindness."

Pizza Party at Angelo's

Thank you to Angelo's on the Riverwalk for the pizza party!  They gave us a pizza party as a thank you for the community work we have been doing. It was a nice gesture and lesson for the kids that when you give, it often comes back to you in unexpected ways.
