Hot Water

Image result for water molecules in hot and cold printableHappy Monday!  Today in science we talked about thermal energy and how it affects matter and water. We did a fun little experiment.  Ask your student to describe what happens to atoms when they get heated up. https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=1&v=ZPErStqSSMk Also God is so amazing that He made something happen to water after it gets colder than 4C....ask your student for the answer.

In writer's workshop we talked about good endings. To make a good ending we want to reiterate the information from the beginning and we want to introduce a new idea.  Ask your student what story they wrote today.

Our Bible verses for this week are:

1st & 2nd graders
"God blessed the seventh day and made it a holy day. He made it holy because on that day he rested. He rested from all the work he had done in creating the world.” Genesis 2:3

5th – 7th graders
“I am telling you these things now while I am still with you. But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.” John 14:25-26

Our quote for today is from Roy T. Bennett, “Be grateful for what you already have while you pursue your goals. If you aren’t grateful for what you already have, what makes you think you would be happy with more.”

Science is Fun!

Thank you to Pastor Brad for coming to do our chapel and to Ms. Nancy for doing our music. We feel so loved and supported!

Today we had Mrs. Harris, the assistant superintendent for the RMC, in our classroom today as a guest. She commented that the students were very bright and she loved looking at their stories during writer's workshop.  She also presented Mrs. Velbis with an award for the best PBL CHERISH project idea for the year - that was a nice surprise!

In science we did a fun experiment about thermal energy. I don't want to ruin it for the students who want to try it at home. So moms and dads - here is the link of how to do the experiment: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zih8_BqolS0&t=23s

We read a book in writer's workshop about ideas.  So today our quote for today is from Marie Curie, “Be less curious about people and more curious about ideas.”

Congratulations!

Congratulations to Collin and Ms. Patton for being selected as winners for the Pueblo Public Library Circus Art Contest! There were almost 800 entries from all over the city. The winners received a booklet of the winners' art and a gift certificate at a ceremony at the Rawlings Library.

Our quote for today is from Henry David Thoreau, "This world is but a canvas to our imagination."

Energy

Today, in science, we learned about different types of energy and how to measure energy.  We also talked about thermal energy. Please ask your student what experiment we did and what they learned that could help your family's energy bills.

The students are doing a great job in math - they just need to keep studying those basic facts.  Flashcards and games are a great way to reinforce these facts. Here is a good website: http://softschools.com/math/games/

In writing the 5th-7th graders have worked on two essay map examples and now have some blank essay maps to write their rough draft outlines on. These four essay maps are due next Thursday for our PBL. All students need to show their four interviews this Thursday.

Please remember that reading book packets are also due next Thursday.

At parent/teacher conferences this week, I suggested that all parents encourage reading at home for pleasure. Here is a great article that has some suggestions to make your child into a strong and confident reader. http://www.scholastic.com/parents/resources/article/more-reading-resources/reading-tips-parents

Our quote for today is from Harry Truman, "In reading the lives of great men, I found that the first victory they won was over themselves... self-discipline with all of them came first."

An Awesome Monday

The colors, sunshine, and crunching leaves underfoot are all such wonderful gifts from God. I love this picture of the students under the brilliant tree.

PLEASE TAKE NOTICE: Because of the evangelistic series the students will not be playing the chimes this weekend. It is being rescheduled to another date. As soon as I know that date I will notify you.

The students need to have proof that they have four interviews done by this Thursday. The first four rough drafts for 5th-7th graders will be due next Thursday. It has been exciting to see how much they are learning from their elders and their enthusiasm for their new-found knowledge.

Our Bible verses for the week are:

1st & 2nd graders:

Then God said, “Let us make human beings in our image and likeness. And let them rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky. Let them rule over the tame animals, over all the earth and over all the small crawling animals on the earth.” Genesis 1:26

5th – 7th graders:

“For it’s by God’s grace that you have been saved. You receive it through faith. It was not our plan or our effort. It is God’s gift, pure and simple. You didn’t earn it, not one of us did, so don’t go around bragging that you must have done something amazing.” Ephesians 2:8,9
Our quote for today is, "Wherever you go, no matter what the weather, always bring your own sunshine."  ~

Interviews

Adventist Community ServicesA BIG thank you to Mr. Delbert Hayden who very generously gave his time to let the students interview him for their PBL project. Pastor Brad will be coming in tomorrow to do the same thing. The students have been surprised at the information they are learning about people they see on a regular basis. I am so glad that they will be able to give these every day heroes some recognition.

In the student's folder you will find a permission slip for a short field trip on Thursday. We are going to help the Adventist Community Services organize their donations for the people affected by the Beulah fire. Afterwards, we will go to City Park for a picnic lunch. This will be a great opportunity for our students to help out their community. Please sign and return tomorrow.

Today in science we learned about different types of energy. Point to different things in the house and ask them what kind of energy it represents. Also ask them if it is potential or kinetic.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=86PzkRbw4_U&list=PLoN89mLJ12e5nkf8DJpOGN7AuuuQzScw_&index=4

In writing we learned how to write a paragraph. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p44F3lbO7oA My older students wrote down notes and are learning how to write a research paper/essay.  Here is a great example of a hero paper. http://www.professays.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/Hero-Essay-Sample.jpg

Our quote for today is from Christopher Reeve, "A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.

Beautiful Monday

What a beautiful fall Monday!  The students had a gorgeous backdrop for a class picture.

Today was the first day of the second quarter.  We have now switched from history to science for this quarter. We started off our talk with different types of energy and talking about gravity. Ask your student what kind of experiments we did and what they learned. Here is the video that we watched: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aRhkQTQxm4w

In writing we talked about the importance of transitions.  This is a fun video to teach and help them remember to use TRANSITIONS! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uzhD9-ajrm4

This morning in worship we also talked about our WHY. Why do we do what we do? Ask your student why they come to school and then talk to them about why you go to work.  Here is what I told the students: Mrs. Velbis is a teacher so that she can encourage curiosity, a thirst for knowledge, and strong character and life skills, while also prayerfully reflecting the love of Jesus to young people. Your WHY provides you with clarity, meaning and direction.

Bible verses for this week:

1st & 2nd graders
Then God said, “Let the earth be filled with animals. And let each produce more of its own kind. Let there be tame animals and small crawling animals and wild animals.” Genesis 1:24

5th – 7th graders
“For in Christ lives all the fullness of God in a human body. So you also are complete through your union with Christ, who is the head over every ruler and authority.” Colossians 2:9-10

Our quote for today is from Simon Sinek, author of  Start With Why, “You don’t hire for skills, you hire for attitude. You can always teach skills.”
