Back to Work

Thank you Charles for this illustration of the word disheveled.  We have new vocabulary words for the week and new word wall illustrations.

We are back to working hard for our last quarter of the year.  The end is in sight and we will keep training hard!

The 5th graders will have a math test on Tuesday, and the 3rd and 4th graders will have one Wednesday.  We also started new math facts quizzes today.  Your student will need to finish what they did not complete and return it tomorrow. On Monday, new reading packet pages are due.

I am sending your student home with a School Mate Publishing permission and order slip.  EVEN IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO ORDER A BOOK PLEASE RETURN THE PERMISSION SLIP A.S.A.P.

Your student is also being sent home with a reminder to sign up for parent/teacher conferences.  Please schedule them through the office.

Our Bible verse this week is found in Proverbs 3:3-4 NLT, "Never let loyalty and kindness leave you! Tie them around your neck as a reminder. Write them deep within your heart. Then you will find favor with both God and people, and you will earn a good reputation."

Self Control

We have been studying in Bible about having self control.  Thank you Collin for this picture.  Satan is definitely waiting to trap us if we don't have self control.  Praise God that He is more than willing to help us with this.

Tomorrow the 4th graders will have a mid-chapter math test.  Everyone will have a social studies U.S. Regions review test, a Bible memory verses and quiz and reading packet due.  Reading Plus must be done by Thursday morning also.  All grades will be done at the end of the day on Thursday.  Please make sure that you call the office to schedule your parent/teacher conference.

Our quote for today is from Norman Vincent Peale, " The cyclone derives its powers from a calm center.  So does a person."

Rainy Monday

Wow, today was a rainy Monday, but we still got a lot accomplished.  Our Bible verse for this week is from Titus 2: 11-12, "For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all people. It trains us to reject godless ways and worldly desires and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age..."

Please note that this week is a short week.  Thursday is 11:30 dismissal and no school on Friday.  Because of the shortened week there will not be any spelling words, definitions, or Spelling City assignments.  There WILL BE Think Central, Reading Plus and Bible verse - which are due on THURSDAY.  Also due on Thursday are 3rd, 4th, 5th grade reading packets.  Tomorrow we will have a Social Studies quiz over the Western region.  Also due tomorrow is a Bio Poem.

Hopefully you received the invitation last Friday from your child for the "Donuts for Dad" day on Friday, April 11th.  From 7:30-8:00am any adult male role model can come to hang out for a few minutes in our school room and see what we have been doing lately while munching on yummy donuts.  We are also encouraging the "dads" to stay for our chapel at 8:30am.  Don't worry moms, you'll get your chance in May.

Our quote for today is from Leonardo da Vinci, "One can have no smaller or greater mastery than mastery of oneself."

Spirit Day

We had Queen Esther, Mary, David, Deborah and an angel in our class day.  Today was dress like a Bible character day.  Tonight is also the student council sponsored vespers at 7pm.

Many of the students are missing school supplies and need to have them replenished.  PLEASE make sure your student has all of their school supplies.  We also need more Kleenex boxes for our room.  Donations would be greatly appreciated.

Blessed with Music

What a beautiful blessing we had today listening to the FLA Solid Bronze hand bell choir. Some of our students even had the chance of playing some hand chimes with them.  Through a question and answer period we also found out that they practice one hour a day, Monday through Thursday.

Today we continued learning about the Western Region of the United States.  Next week we will have a quiz and then have a review test on all of the regions.  Please remember that 3rd and 4th graders will have reading packets due on the first chapters of their new books.  The 5th graders will have theirs due on Thursday.  Tomorrow the 4th graders will have a chapter math test.

We are working on the common core standard
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.4.(3,4,5) which is to identify the reasons and evidence a speaker provides to support particular points.  We are watching a speech by a young women who is now using her trials inlife to be a witness and inspiration to many young people.  You can take a look at the speech at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0OV92Yyl20.

Roaring Lion

Thank you Erica for this picture of a roaring lion which we used to help us remember this week's Bible verse.

Today we started the WRAP testing which put us a little behind in some of our other subjects.  Therefore, the 3rd and 4th graders will have their reading tests tomorrow.

Please remember that on Monday they will math facts tests.  Here are a few good websites to practice at http://www.fun4thebrain.com/quizzes.html, http://www.multiplication.com/resources/online-tests-and-quizzes, and  http://www.mathplayground.com/flashcards_timed.html.

Tomorrow we will also be having a social studies quiz on the Southwest Region.  It is an open note quiz.  We reviewed in class today.

Our quote today is from Benjamin Franklin, Remember not only to say the right thing in the right place, but far more difficult still, to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting moment.

Friday News

First, I would like to thank all of the parents who were able to attend our field trip on Thursday. Thanks for helping to make it a great success!

On Monday, the 5th graders will have a math test.  3rd and 4th graders will have their reading packets due.  Next week we will be WRAP testing all week - which is a writing test that is sent in to the conference and graded.

Next week the students will also have their states and capitals tests.  This is a part of their social studies grade.

Our quote for today is from Joyce Meyer, “You can control yourself if you really want to. I'll tell you how I know you can control yourself. If you were in a full fledged emotional temper tantrum in your house and I knocked on your front door..... Come on! Let me tell you what, you would get control of yourself, and it would only take a few seconds.”

State Projects Continued

Today we continued our state projects.  We learned that Rhode Island was known for it's good seafood, Washington state is the only state named after a president, and California has the tallest falls in the USA.

Parents, please arrive at the school at 7:20 for our Kennedy Space Center field trip.  We will be leaving at 7:30 to arrive on time for our scheduled group photo.  Students need to wear their DAS navy blue shirts and jeans.  Please bring a sack lunch and snacks.  We will be staying until closing time at 5:00pm.  To get a preview of the facility go to http://www.kennedyspacecenter.com/.

Please make sure that your student is on track to have their Reading Plus, Bible verse, spelling words and definitions due for Friday.

Our quote today is from Thucydides, “Self-control is the chief element in self-respect, and self-respect is the chief element in courage.”

State Projects

Cornbread, rice, beans, peach cobbler, apple crisp, pizza, carrots, apples, sourdough bread...sound yummy?  It was!  These are just a few of the foods brought in today for our state projects.  Did you know that they make prickly pear cactus candy in Arizona?  Or that Vernon's Ginger Ale originated in Michigan?  The students are doing a great job on their oral presentations too.

This week there are no Spelling City assignments, but they will still be expected to write their words 5x each and write their definitions.

We are studying self control in Bible this week.  Our quote today comes from Benjamin Franklin, “Educate your children to self-control, to the habit of holding passion and prejudice and evil tendencies subject to an upright and reasoning will, and you have done much to abolish misery from their future and crimes from society.”

Oral Presentations

Thank you Dylan for taking this very silly picture of your classmates!

Today, we watched some example presentations on what to do and not to do, during an oral presentation.  I suggested the students go home and practice in front of the mirror.  I am very excited to hear their opinions on their states.

Only a few more days till our field trip to Kennedy Space Center!  Remember that we will be leaving at 7:30am on Thursday.  Please bring a sack lunch and snacks for the day.

Next week is our last week of the quarter.  The students will have their math facts tests, 3rd and 4th graders will have reading tests and packets due, and everyone will have a states and capitals test.

Our Bible verse for this week is found at Proverbs 25:28, "Like a city whose walls are broken through is a person who lacks self-control."
