Families

In Bible we have been talking about God's family the Trinity and how we have the joy and blessings of families on earth.  Teams, classmates, clubs, churches are all kinds of families in addition to our own families.  We are so thankful for God's love and that we can share with the people around us.

Today we continued to work hard on our math concepts and in science we took a chapter quiz.  In writing we took a noun quiz and discussed the sequence and necessity of a paragraph or paper.

We did some brainstorming about our Pathways books in reading.  I will be sending home a Reading Plus report for their initial benchmarking test at the beginning of the year.  They should be scoring very close to their grade level in all areas.  Please let me know if you have any questions about these.

Tomorrow, all homework sheets need to be returned with goals and signatures.  We will have spellling, vocabulary and memory verse quizzes.  Spellingcity assignments and spelling words and definitions are due along with the memory verse written 5X and illustrated.  Please remember that Reading Plus assignments are due at midnight on Sunday.  Some students still have a lot of assignments to complete.

Handicaps

We are so thankful for our bodies that God created. We "practiced" having different handicaps to know how difficult it can be.  Even if we have handicaps we can overcome with perseverance. Here is an incredible video of a young woman who did not put the word "can't" in her vocabulary. https://docs.google.com/file/d/0ByFUzo9KwryWWkRwUEw4bmZNaVk/view?sle=true

The fourth graders will start preparing for their chapter math test which will be next Tuesday.  Please work with your child at home, studying the concepts and even looking up the videos on Kahn Academy for extra support.

Today in writer's workshop we read a wonderful book.  Here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T18NCobS43c. The stories the students came up with on their own were wonderful.  We are talking about how to use sequencing and transitions in our writing.

In reading we are working on different reading strategies to help them understand their text.

Tomorrow, science exercise journals are due plus we will have a quiz on nouns.

On Friday, memory verse written and illustrated and recited is due, spellingcity assignments, spelling words and definitions and spelling and vocabulary tests will be given.  Friday, at 8:00am is our first monthly awards ceremony of the school year.  Please come to support our students! Your child's Reading Plus will also be due on Monday morning.

If you have any questions please call the office to set up an appointment or email me at michelle.velbis@floridaconference.com.

Happy Birthday Joey!

Happy Birthday Joey!  Thanks for the delicious cupcakes! Today was also picture day.  The students looked precious with their beautiful smiles!

In math the 4th and 5th graders had a quiz and the third graders had their normal assignments.

We learned an important concept from Kahn Academy today - that "you can learn
anything!" https://www.khanacademy.org/youcanlearnanything?video=main

In Bible we talked about the importance of the Bible and how we can use it to help us in life and being a part of God's army.  It is our shield and instructional manual.

Please have your student bring their homework sheet back to school everyday.  I will keep track of their completed assignments this way.

In science we took a quiz over chapter 4.  It was open book and with partners. Tomorrow we will begin Chapter 5 "What Factors Affect Your Body?"

In writer's workshop we talked about how an oxymoron and unexpected events can add interest to our stories.  Our book for today was, Picture Day Perfection.  We are also continuing our study in nouns focusing on the difference between abstract and concrete nouns.  Here is a great noun video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8kcJzh6gqGM.

Our quote for today is from Dwight L. Moody, "It is a masterpiece of the devil to make us believe that children cannot understand religion. Would Christ have made a child the standard of faith if He had known that it was not capable of understanding His words?"

Homework Sheet

We are starting the second week of school with a great memory verse.  It is found in 2 Timothy 3:16, "All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives.  It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right."

In science we continued to talk about the body systems.  Today we focused on the respiratory and circulatory systems.

Today the students were given their homework sheets that they will be responsible for.  I attached their math homework for the entire week.  Please sit down with them and write your goals for the week.  On Friday, I will need the homework sheet signed and turned in.  This is how I give them credit for their class work.

In writing we brainstormed and came up with a discussion rule list, so that we can be respectful to our classmates when we are having group discussions.  We also read a very funny story called, Mr. President Goes to School.  The students then were able to write their own funny story about a character coming to school.

We started the reading test for Reading Plus today to determine their reading level and also the DIBELS reading fluency test.

I am sending home a flyer and permission slip for the September 19th, field trip to FLEC science lab.  There will be some materials that each student will need to bring.

Permission Slips & Homework Sheets

Well, we have successfully completed our first week of school! YEAH!!! Today we had our first DAS chapel, where Mr. Barajas talked about respect.

We did math rotations.  All students were given a lesson to do from their math workbooks.  Please check with your student to make sure they completed it.

We talked about skeletal and muscular body systems.  There is a nice website with two games on it to help them understand the skeletal  system better. http://www.abcya.com/skeletal_system.htm

Today your child was sent home with a newsletter and information about picture day.  Picture day is next Wednesday, August 20th.

I just wanted to let you know that I am so excited about this year!  Each student is so precious and I am dedicated to helping guide them, with your partnership, to a successful spiritual and educational journey.

NEW field trip & Digestion

We started our day talking about respect and what it looks like.  The students had great ideas on what respect is.  We also reviewed different situations and if the person in that situation applied the golden rule or not.

In science we talked about the body organs, and we tasted the difference between eating a cracker with or without moisture to demonstrate the importance of saliva. We also watched a Bill Nye episode on digestion.  Please put on your calendars FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 19th.  We will be going to the FLEC science lab.  I will need drivers.

In Math we did a multiplication crossword puzzle, muliplication.com and math rotations.  Lesson 2 and the crossword puzzle is due tomorrow morning.

In writer's workshop we used magazine pictures and words to put in our notebooks to help inspire us for future stories.

Our quote for today is from Albert Einstein, "Everyone should be respected as an individual."

Brainstorming

In science we dove into our science books. This quarter we will be
studying our complex and wondrous bodies. Today we talked a little bit about our brains and we also did an experiment about our reaction responses.

In Math we started on our new books and did lesson one.  Please have that lesson and one math fact sheet done for tomorrow.

In writing we talked about the writing process and brainstorming.  Ask your student some of the ways they can think up ideas for their writing.

We also did a four - step process in drawing a bird and using watercolors to paint it.  The students did an incredible job!  I will be hanging them up in my room if you want to take a look.

Starting Math

What a great second day of school in Mrs. Velbis' classroom!  We did an awesome science experiment using the scientific method and we learned about polymers.  Did you know that you can stick a pencil through a plastic bag without it leaking?

In Bible we learned that we need to meet, talk, live and pray our faith so that we can be a light for Jesus.

We started into our math books today.  We did pages 3 & 4, wrote definitions and did a math fact sheet.  I gave the students extra time to complete these in class.  They will need to have their definitions and math fact sheet done for tomorrow.  Many of the students need to memorize their multiplication and division tables.  I found a great video to help them.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZ4qjYOixAg  Please work their math facts with them at home and in the car.

We also talked about setting SMART goals and made a goal book. S = specific   M = measurable   A = action   R = realistic   T = time  Ask your student what their goal was and please sign their goal book.

Today, we also did a handwriting exercise using Luke 10:27.

Our quote for today is from Socrates, “Education is the kindling of a flame, not the filling of a vessel.”

First Day of School

A very fun and exciting first day of school at DAS!  In Mrs. Velbis' room we got to have snacks that started with our student's names.  Kristen brought in kiwi, Nina brought in Nutella banana bread, Tristan brought in Triscuits, Joey brought in jello, etc.  It was a delicious way to start off the year.

We also brought bags that had 5 simple things that told our classmates about ourselves.  Luke brought in a seashell because he likes going to the beach, Lizette brought in a piggy bank from her collection, Joshua brought in one of his favorite books, etc. I enjoyed getting to know my students better.

We also went over school and classroom rules and procedures, wrote in our writer's notebook and made a bird feeder.

Our quote for today is from Martin Luther King Jr, “Intelligence plus character-that is the goal of true education.”
