Parallelogram Nutcracker

We have been working on an Advent calendar for Bible - it has been inspirational to see how God had a plan for our salvation from the beginning of the world.

Today we watched some videos on how colonialists celebrated Christmas. Then we took our social studies quiz.  The students did a great job.

Today we did a math parallelogram nutcracker project.  They turned out really nice!

We also continued our writing project.  I wish I could see the parents faces when they open up their gifts on Christmas!

Our quote for today is from Bob Hope, “My idea of Christmas, whether old-fashioned or modern, is very simple: loving others. Come to think of it, why do we have to wait for Christmas to do that?”

Today we took our math facts tests for the quarter.  I am happy to say that everyone did a great job!  Tomorrow we will be taking our Social Studies quiz.  This week Reading Plus will be due on FRIDAY.  It is the only weekly assignment that is due this week.  Today we are diligently working on our Christmas projects. All permission slips are due tomorrow for the Legoland field trip.

Christmas Ornament Exchange & Sock Donation

Velbis Classroom Christmas Ornament Exchange and Sock Donation
Please bring in one wrapped Christmas ornament that would be appropriate for a girl or boy.  Please also bring in one pair of NEW socks for local shelters and foster homes in Orlando. Do not wrap them.  The sock drive is run by a Lake Mary, 16 year-old boy.  You can find out more information at sockdrive.net. Any sock sizes will be accepted. Please bring the ornament and socks on December 19th.

Dress Rehearsal

Today we spent a lot of time at a dress rehearsal for the Christmas program this Saturday.  Please have your students here at 10:00 a.m.  They will need to meet in our classroom to get their costumes on.  Be prepared for a wonderful program.

We chose colonial trades today and learned about our chosen trade.  In the previous post is a link to a great website to learn more about colonial life.

We continued working on our writing project and for reading we started to work on a class play and learning about stage directions.

Tomorrow the students will take their poetry quiz.

Our quote for today is from Peg Bracken, "Gifts of time and love are surely the basic ingredients of a truly merry Christmas."

Nursing Home Visit

Today our students shared their beautiful voices and smiles with the residents of a local nursing home.  They sang 6 traditional carols and the residents joined in and some even clapped along.  Last week at chapel they were challenged with what they were going to give this Christmas - this was definitely a gift from their hearts and it was received with much gladness.

Hour of Code

Today was an exciting day in our classroom as we participated in the Hour of Code event.  Over 50 million children from all over the world have tried the Hour of Code.  Here was our kick off message from President Obama: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JDw1ii7aKwg&feature=youtu.be.  Your child can continue learning on their own by going to http://code.org/learn. Each child that participated also received a certificate.

Our Bible lesson this week will focus on forgiveness.  Our Bible verse is:
" If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness." 1 John 1:8,9

Tomorrow we will be going on our field trip to the John Knox Nursing Home to sing carols.  If I have any parents that would be willing to drive, please let me know.

Please remember that the students writing projects are due on Friday.  All weekly assignments are also due.  This week we will also be taking a poetry quiz.  This is our last week to practice math facts.  This coming Monday they will take them for a grade.

Our quote for today is from Clay Bedford, "You can teach a student a lesson for a day; but if you can teach him to learn by creating curiosity, he will continue the learning process as long as he lives."

Today after our chapel on generosity we had a practice for the music program which is next Sabbath. It is going to a beautiful service and the students are doing such a great job.

Today we studied about Pocahontas in social studies and we also took our reading tests.  Please make sure your student is working on their writing project, which is due Friday, December 12th.  It is worth 120 points.

Our quote today is from John Holmes, “There is no exercise better for the heart than reaching down and lifting people up.”

Have a wonderful weekend!

A Child Is Born

Today, we worked on a poster titled, "A Child Is Born."  The students did an amazing job.  Here is Neena's creative version.

In math the 4th graders took their mid-chapter test and the 3rd graders will take their chapter test tomorrow.  The 5th graders worked on common denominators in fractions.

Today in social studies we continued studying about Jamestown.  And in writing we worked on writing limericks and shape poems.  The students are also taking turns writing a narrative on WPP online for a grade.

In reading we reviewed for the reading tests that the students will take tomorrow.  Tomorrow their weekly assignments are due.  Please return permission slips tomorrow for the field trip next week.

Our quote for today is from C.S. Lewis, "The Son of God became a man to
enable men to become the sons of God."

Snowflakes

This week we colored patterned snowflakes.  This is a picture of Satrese's.  She did a beautiful job.  Isn't it wonderful how God made us all different - just like snowflakes?

Next week our class will be participating in the Hour of Code.  Please watch this exciting video - I am thrilled to be able to offer this to my students!  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rH7AjDMz_dc&index=2&list=PLzdnOPI1iJNe1WmdkMG-Ca8cLQpdEAL7Q

Tomorrow the 4th graders will be having a math mid-chapter test.  Please have them review.  The 3rd graders will be having their chapter test on Friday.

Today we talked about poetry and the different kinds, definitions and purposes.  They are writing poetry for their next writing project.

I am sending home a permission slip today for a field trip to the John Knox Nursing Home, next Tuesday the 9th at 10:45 a.m.  Please sign and return tomorrow.  I still need a few drivers - please let me know if you would be available.  We will be singing Christmas carols to the residents.

Today's quote is by Thoreau, "Nature is full of genius, full of the divinity; so that not a snowflake escapes its fashioning
hand."

New Writing Project

Today I handed out a new writing project that is due Friday, December 12th.  The picture for today as the assignment and the rubric.

Today we did new math lessons - 3rd graders are still working on dividing, 4th graders started figuring out to find a common denominator in fractions and 5th graders are adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators.

In social studies we are studying about Jamestown. In reading we are reviewing our reading books and packets for a reading test on Friday.

Tomorrow math assignments and one handwriting lesson are due.

Our quote for today is from Anna Quindelin, “Books are the plane, and the train, and the road. They are the destination, and the journey. They are home.”

Half Day

Today we gave out new spelling words, Bible verse, did math facts and a math lesson.  All online assignments are up.

Our Bible verse this week is:

"I will walk in the way of integrity. When will you come to me? I will conduct my business with integrity in the midst of my palace. I will not even consider doing what is dishonest. I hate doing evil; I will have no part of it." Psalms 101:2,3

In two weeks the students will have their math facts scores for their quarter grade.  Please encourage them to study their math facts whenever they can.  Help them with flash cards or asking them facts when you are riding in the car - parent involvement is key to their success.
