This Week is ITBS Testing

Standardized tests: How can you help your child prepare?
Teachers tell us that successful test-takers tend to be students with good attendance, homework, and study habits; therefore, your daily assistance with homework and attitude toward school have the biggest impact on your child's performance. However, there are key ways you can develop his test-taking ability.
  • Optimize brain power.
Teachers say the students who struggle the most on testing days are the ones who didn't have enough sleep or a good breakfast the day of the test. Also, students who are physically or mentally unprepared often encounter problems. Make sure she has every tool she needs — pencils, an eraser, paper, a calculator, etc. laid out the night before, as well as any preliminary paperwork filled out, if possible. If she isn't feeling well on the test day, it's better to keep her home and let her make up the test later rather than risk poor performance.
  • Encourage good study habits and challenge critical-thinking skills.
Reviewing test-taking strategies is important, but monitoring overall academic progress and staying in good communication with the teacher will help you ward off potential problems. Good reading skills factor heavily in a timed test, so encourage reading (consider magazines, newspapers, or even comic books if he shies away from books) as much as possible. Testing also measures critical-thinking ability, so ask him to discuss ideas or voice his opinion often to stimulate these thought processes.

Please Help!

Beth's Fight Against Breast Cancer
My beautiful sister Beth Michaels inherited my mother’s gorgeous smile, gift of song and love of nature. Unfortunately, she also inherited the breast cancer gene. This strong gene, took our mother and grandmother too soon, but it has not taken my sister’s strong faith in the Lord. She has been fighting this unseen foe for three years, but her body is beginning to display signs of this hard fought battle. We are asking that you claim God’s victory over her body.  Beth is asking for strong prayer warriors in her behalf, “God is not finished with me yet.” This battle also requires chemo treatments, hospital stays, intravenous supplementation, blood work and the list goes on…and so do the bills. I know that the body of Christ can rally for Beth in prayer and in resources. “Therefore encourage and comfort one another and build up one another, just as you are doing.” 1 Thessalonians 5:11  Thank you in advance for your love, support and prayers.

Spanish Lessons

I love this picture of our 1st grader and 8th grader putting up the flag.  It really shows how our older students are patient role models and helpers to their younger classmates.

Today in history we talked about Jubal and Tubal-Cain. Please ask your student who they were and why they were important.  Here is a neat video that we watched to show the complexity of bronze making: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eEWIuyeNp2k.

Today, Mr. John Garcia came in to start teaching our students conversational Spanish. To supplement their knowledge in a fun way I suggest going to https://www.duolingo.com/.

Please mark October 13th on your calendar for Picture Day. Also - next week is ITBS testing. Please have students make sure to eat a healthy breakfast and bring healthy snacks and lunch to ensure their success on the testing.

Tomorrow all weekly assignments and quizzes will be due.

Our quote for today is from Maya Angelou, “When we give cheerfully and accept gratefully, everyone is blessed.”

Mid-Term Reports

What a beautiful day to start our week with!  We began our day learning some new music and we also began learning a poem today for our service on October 24.  Today I am sending home the student's mid-term reports. Please let me know if you have any questions.

One area that the students are improving on but still have a long way to go is in their math facts. PLEASE have your child do flashcards or there are also apps and computer games where they can practice.  This is extremely important for their math future and it cuts down on frustration as we learn new concepts. Here are some sites to try out: http://hoodamath.com/, http://www.aplusmath.com/games/, and http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/math.htm.

Today we started a new history curriculum called Mystery of History. Today we learned about creation. Here is a video that we watched: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sWecPwrQv2c&list=PL1v9pqs4w1mxRVplL9I5Pq_qQH9jy8b1V

Please remember that Bible projects are due on October 1 and Reading Packets are due on October 8th.

Our quote for today is from Denis Waitley, "A smile is the light in your window that tells others that there is a caring, sharing person inside."

Reading Plus

Please remember that Reading Plus is due on Monday morning! Also, I would suggest that students start working on their Bible projects this weekend. These projects need to show that they have spent some time in effort and creativity.

Also, this Saturday, there is a special vespers at Liberty Point at 6:30pm. Please come join us for a worshipful experience.

Pupils in the Pulpit

This week at church board meeting I signed up some of my students to be in the "pulpit" for prayer.  I am praying that by having our young people actively involved in the church service they will feel like they are needed and wanted by the church. It is also giving them some public speaking skills. You never know - maybe they will be upfront preaching one day!

Grant              September 19

Audra             September 26

Bella               October 3

Collin              October 10
Daystar          October 24

Daystar has been very blessed by Mrs. Patton and especially her art skills. The picture today is of the student's artwork - it really is amazing. Please come in and take a look!

We are ordering school t-shirts. The students will all receive one but we are also encouraging parents, family members and church members to order one too. Please go to this link: https://www.customink.com/g/gew0-00a9-651t

FrontBack

In English we have been learning about nouns, verbs, subjects and predicates.  Here is a video the students can watch at home: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dbhLKwZz5Ls

Remember that all weekly assignments are due tomorrow and memory verse and spelling/vocabulary tests.

Today we talked a lot about kindness and what that looks like. Our quote for today is from Bob Hope, "If you haven't any charity in your heart, you have the worst kind of heart trouble."
