First Quizzes of the Year Tomorrow

Bible memory verse quizzes will be tomorrow.
1st - 4th graders:
“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory.” Isaiah 6:3

 5th – 8th graders:
“I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.” Psalm 119:11
Make sure to study spelling words tonight. Our first spelling quiz is tomorrow.
Today we learned some more map skills. Here is a silly song to help the students remember latitude and longitude: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Ab-gE8ov4o
In writer's workshop we are learning different brainstorming techniques and in reading we are learning different reading comprehension strategies. For reading we are using the strategy of using background knowledge to help us understand the text better.
Our five newest essential rules from Ron Clark are:
#21 Do not get out of your seat without permission. Raise your hand to speak.
#22 Bring a bottle of water to class. Do not ask for a drink during a lesson.
#23 Greet the other teachers in the school when you see them.
#24 Flush the toilet and wash your hands after using the rest room.
#25 Make visitors feel special and welcomed to our school.

First Chapel of the Year

Thank you Pastor Brad for coming and giving our first chapel of the year and to Ms. Nancy for playing the piano for us.

Today we started into our text books. It will take a couple of days to get into the swing of things. So parents please help your child complete their daily work and have them start on their weekly work. Last week I sent home a homework completion sheet for weekly work. Please check weekly assignment due dates and have your child make a plan on how to complete those assignments by the due date.

6th-8th grade were given their new reading books and packets. 6th & 7th grade packets will be due on September 25th. 8th grade packets will be due on October 19th.

In Social Studies we started doing map skills. Here is a cute video that introduces the main concepts: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DnPM2su2g6Q

Tomorrow we will meet at 7:30am for the field trip to the fair. Please have your student bring: backpack with water bottle, sunscreen, hat, lunch, snack, and spending money if you so choose. Pick up for all students is at 3:00pm so that families can go back to enjoy the fair if they so choose.

The Essential 55 Rules:
#16 Homework will be turned in each day by every student for every assignment.
#17 Make transitions between subjects swift, quiet, and orderly.
#18 Be as organized as possible.
#19 No moaning or complaining when work is assigned.
#20 When there is a substitute, all rules apply.

Affirming Self-Talk by Arlene Taylor

Affirmations for yourself are a form of personal self-talk and every human being uses it. Appropriate self-talk is one of the most effective, least-utilized tools available to master the mind, foster success, and overcome fear, and achieve your goals.

Your inner self-talk voice takes shape in early childhood and persists lifelong. As with most other brain functions, self-talk may be misused, becoming a source of painful rumination or even psychosis, or it can enhance your success. Thoughts create your mindset and mindset creates your self-talk, A series of groundbreaking studies have found that how people conduct their inner self-talk has an enormous effect on their success in life.

Great First Week!

Ron Clark's 55 Essential Rule
#11 Do random acts of kindness.
#12 When grading papers keep the score private.
#13 When we read together in class, follow along.
#14 Answer all questions with a complete sentence
#15 Do not ask for rewards.

Parents, today I sent home a homework sheet to explain weekly work assignments and also website addresses and your child's username and password. Weekly assignments will start next week.

Today we discussed the importance of digital footprints and how we need to be careful what we post online. Here is one of the videos that we watched: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uwY6KsipuJQ

First week of school was a success! Thank you for your prayers and support!

Brain Susceptibility

Brain Susceptibility By Dr. Arlene Taylor (arlenetaylor.org)
Your brain is susceptible to what others say about you and may even record that (along with what you say to and about yourself) in the same place in the brain—so it is important to protect your brain (insofar as it is possible to do so) from negative input. Children are less able to do that. Consequently it is critical to evaluate what you were told about yourself and what you heard others say about yourself—or you may be risk for believing them. What they said was only their brain’s opinion but if you believed them if could derail your success or even influence you not to do something that your brain could be very good at doing.

Goals and Grit

We continued talking about grit and goals today. We talked and studied about people who have had this quality. Ask your student who inspires them to have grit.

We continued our lesson on the 55 essential rules.
#6 If you are asked a question in conversation, you ask a question in return.
#7 When you cough, sneeze, or burp, turn your head away.
#8 Do not show disrespect with gestures. (ex. eye roll)
#9 Always say thank you when someone gives you something.
#10 When you are given something, never make a negative comment about the gift.

Parents: Please sign into your Jupiter accounts and check that your student's and family's information is correct. When we start inputting grades, this is where you will be able to check your student's grades. https://login.jupitered.com/login/?80751

55 Essential Rules

Today we started working on Ron Clark's 55 essential rules.
#1 Answer adults with "Yes, sir," and "No, mam."
#2 When someone is speaking, keep eye contact with them.
#3 When someone does something well, congratulate that person.
#4 During discussions, respect others' opinions and ideas.
#5 If you do win at something, do not brag. If you lose, do not show anger.

We have also been talking a lot about GRIT. Here is a video to describe what GRIT is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uwsZZ2rprqc

Daystar is Now an Active School

Daystar is pleased to announce that we are now an "Active School."

What is an Active School? An Active School incorporates physical activity before, during, and after school for at least 60 minutes a day. Studies show active kids do better! They perform better academically. They have better attendance. Their behavior improves. Our kids are moving less only 6 states require physical education in every grade. Only 20% of school districts require daily recess. 2 out of 3 kids today are inactive.

Jesus Is Our Guide

Our theme for this new school year is "Jesus Is Our Guide."  Our key verse is Psalms 32:8, "The Lord says, “I will guide you along the best pathway for your life." Isn't it awesome to know that our Creator and Father will guide us each day? That is a promise I will joyfully cling to!  Enjoy our new theme song - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jvK6ImNTcWY.
