Breast Cancer Awareness Day

Today was Breast Cancer Awareness Day at Daystar. The students showed their support by wearing lots of pink.

We learned about air pressure today and we did an experiment with an aluminum can to demonstrate that warm air has less pressure and cold air has more pressure. Here is a cool demonstration by Bill Nye: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-n6f79FNOg.

In writing we talked about idioms https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dgWlE1NsEjU and acrostic poetry https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vtZmIkxDqzY.

Don't forget that Monday is Bring A Friend Day!  Also please make sure to bring back permission slips signed for the Outdoor Education at Canon City.

Our quote for today is from Francis Chan, "“If life were stable, I'd never need God's help.”

PIE Night Was a Success!

Parent Involvement in Education (PIE) night was a great success!  Thanks to everyone who came and participated and to all who came out to enjoy the activities.  Our next PIE night is scheduled for January 26th and the theme will be literacy.

Today we learned what a haiku is and what alliteration is.  Ask your student to give you some examples.  If they need to review the concepts they can watch these videos again. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGJu6LzUfYM and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MfzrAk6EV9c

Tomorrow is PINK day for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. I wander who will win the prize???

Today I am sending home information on our Bring a Friend Day and also our outdoor education experience. Please invite friends, neighbors and family (1st through 8th grade) for Bring A Friend Day. District 60 students do not have school that day.

Reading packets and all weekly assignments are due tomorrow.

Our quote for today is from Dr. Suess, "Today you are You, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You."

Enjoying the Fall Breezes and Sunshine

What a beautiful fall day!  At recess the students really enjoyed the sunshine and breezes. I love the smiles on their faces.

Today in science we learned about the earth's atmosphere. Bill Nye had a great video on the subject: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6T_X_Jhzag.

In writing we learned about similes and metaphors. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uoSBVNUO2LU. We also started our poetry unit. We will be entering our poems in a national contest soon.

Tonight is our PIE Math night. The event starts at 6:00 p.m. We hope that you will come and bring your friends and family for a great night of learning and fun!

Don't forget that reading packets are due this Thursday.

Our quote for today is from Rick Warren,  “It’s not what you do, but how much love you put into it that matters.”

Fantastic Program

The students did a FANTASTIC program on Saturday!!!  They looked like bold, happy servants for the Lord as they sang, prayed, read scriptures and recited a poem.

Please remember that tomorrow is PIE Math night at Daystar Christian School at 6:00 p.m. All family and friends are invited for this fun evening!

Our quote for today is from Billy Graham, “Courage is contagious. When a brave man takes a stand, the spines of others are often stiffened."

Rainy Day

Even though it was a dreary, rainy day outside - it was filled with smiles and laughter inside Daystar Christian School. Board games were the choice for recess today.

Tonight is our practice for Saturday's program. We have been practicing in school and the students have been doing a great job. I know that you will be impressed with their enthusiasm and boldness for sharing Jesus.

Please remember that tomorrow all weekly assignments are due. Reading Plus is due on Sunday night.

Our quote for today is from Paul Silway, "“God wants you to know Him as your Heavenly Father! Come boldly into your Father's presence without any fear.”

Milk Fireworks

This quarter we are going to study science. We started off the quarter talking about the scientific method and today we did Milk Fireworks! Ours didn't turn out as well - I guess almond milk doesn't work as well as whole milk - but that is all part of learning and science!  Try it at home with your child. Here is a video that shows off the experiment:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rqQSlEViNpk

Today we also did a Fall walk to work on to work on our word choice. We had a one sentence contest. Congratulations to Collin and Grant - they tied!  Collin wrote, "Birds and squirrels chirp their excitement, and an artist's paintbrush dabs a stroke at the sprinkled pieces of Autumn."  Grant wrote, "Fall is like a fashion show where the trees change from green to yellow, but all must leave to make way for the winter to come down the platform."

Daystar students have practice this Wednesday, the 21st, from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m.  Please also be at the Pueblo First SDA Church this Saturday, the 24th, from 10:30 a.m. to noon in church attire. Our school will be presenting the main church service. Thank you in advance for your cooperation and support.

Please put October 27th on the calendar at 6:00 p.m. for PIE night. (Parental Involvement in Education) Please invite neighbors, relatives and friends. We will be discussing and doing activities to make math more fun!

Also to end the month of October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness month, students who wear the most pink on October 29th to school will receive a small prize.
