1 Million Readers on Reading Plus

Reading Plus is celebrating 1,000,000 readers and Daystar is proud to be part of that number! Reading Plus is an exceptional reading program and we are thrilled to offer it as a part of our reading curriculum for grades 1-8. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bzOCQmYAhM0

We have been diligently working on our poem books that will be mailed out next week for publishing. It will be so fun to see our student's published work!

Keep working on those book reports. Remember to send me a picture of your progress this week.

Our quote is from Charles Spurgeon, "Anxiety does not empty tomorrow of its sorrows, but only empties today of its strength."

Mid Terms

Wow - we are already half way done with 4th quarter!  Mid-term reports are going home today. If you have any questions, please give me a call.

Please make sure to return permission slips and gas money for the track meet this week. We will be leaving at 3:00 pm next Tuesday. If you are not going - please remember that there is no school on Wednesday and Thursday, May 3 & 4.

This week is a full week of regular weekly assignments. 5th-7th graders will also be taking reading book quizzes and everyone needs to meet their first book report benchmark. Please take a picture with your cell phone and text it or email it to me as proof that you are working on your first book report project.

Our Bible verses for this week are:
1st, 2nd, 3rd graders

“It was by faith the walls of Jericho fell. They fell after the people had marched around the walls of Jericho for seven days.” Hebrews 11:30

5th – 7th graders
Again and again the Lord had sent his prophets and seers to warn both Israel and Judah: ‘Turn from all your evil ways. Obey my commands and decrees—the entire law that I commanded your ancestors to obey, and that I gave you through my servants the prophets.’ But the Israelites would not listen.” 2 Kings 17:14-15

Our quote for today is from Roy T. Bennett, "Listen with curiosity. Speak with honesty. Act with integrity."

Creatve Book Report Commitments

Image result for integrity quotesThe students wrote out and signed personal commitments for their upcoming creative book reports. We discussed the importance of integrity and accountability by signing these commitments. Please sign and return on Monday. 5th-7th graders will also be having quizzes each week on their book to  track their comprehension of the story.

Our quote for today is from Zig Ziglar, "With integrity, you have nothing to fear, since you have nothing to hide. With integrity, you will do the right thing, so you will have no guilt."

Newton's Laws of Motion

Great job athletes on your persistent training at the Pueblo Academy of Arts track!  We practiced different running events in preparation for the Grand Junction track meet coming up.

Tomorrow the weekly assignments are due along with a science test. Please make sure your 5th-7th grade student is studying and writing notes. They can also re-watch the videos that I have posted and any others that will help them.

Today we also had a fire drill and lock down drill just for practice. The students are knowledgeable on what they need to do to stay safe.

Our quote for today is from Michael Phelps, "I think that everything is possible as long as you put your mind to it and you put the work and time into it."

Tuesday, April 18, 2017

3rd Law of Motion

We have been studying Newton's Laws of Motion. Today we studied the third one. Ask your child if they remember what it is and if they can explain how the balloon cars work.

I will be trying to get each parent today to sign a release form so that we can go to a local school tomorrow. We will be borrowing a track so that we can practice some of our track and field events.

Please discuss with your child which creative book report project(s) that they will decide to do.

Our quote for today is from Ben Carson, "I started reading about people of great accomplishment... and it dawned on me suddenly that the person who has the most to do with what happens in your life is you."

Chimes Performance

Great job by the Daystar students and Ms. Nancy and Ms. Patton for the Sabbath chimes performance. It was an extra special Easter blessing.

Our Bible verses for this week are:
1st, 2nd, 3rd graders:
“The Lord did the same thing for us at the Jordan that he did for the people at the Red Sea. Remember that he stopped the water at the Red Sea so we could cross. The Lord did this so all people would know he has great power.” Joshua 4:22,23

5th – 7th graders:
“The Lord’s teachings are perfect. They give new strength. The Lord’s rules can be trusted. They make plain people wise. The Lord’s orders are right. They make people happy. The Lord’s commands are pure. They light up the way.” Psalm 19:7,8

Students were sent home with lots of information and permission slips today: track meet info, Pizza Ranch information, and new creative book report information. The book report information is on yesterday's post. When the student's choose which project they want to do, I will send them home with a rubric for that project.

Our quote for today is from Julien Smith,

“No one has a problem with the first mile of a journey. Even an infant could do fine for a while. But it isn't the start that matters. It's the finish line.”

Balancing Forces

We studied balanced and unbalanced forces today. Here is a picture of Audra and Collin balancing their books. They did this for 3 minutes! This is also the video that we watched to reinforce the lecture: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QMpYOW8fpl8

Reminder that this Saturday is our chimes performance. Please be at the Pueblo First SDA church, dressed in church attire, at 10:30 am.

Our quote for today is from Basil Hume, "The great gift of Easter is hope - Christian hope which makes us have that confidence in God, in his ultimate triumph, and in his goodness and love, which nothing can shake."

Chimes Performance this Saturday

Today in art the students concentrated on using shapes to make their drawings.

In science we are learning about forces, gravity and friction. Here is the video from today: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lkPgVRa3lPk

Our quote for today is from Abraham Lincoln, "Upon the subject of education ... I can only say that I view it as the most important subject which we as a people may be engaged in."

Please note that I have sent home a note with the students concerning a chimes performance this Saturday. All students need to be in church attire and be at the Pueblo First SDA Church at 10:30 am. I also need the order forms back for the Student Treasure's class books. Remember, that even if you are not going to purchase a book, please fill out the order form and return it this week.

Please practice spelling words and Bible verses with your children.

Our Bible verses for the week are -

1st and 2nd Graders:
“The Lord says, ‘If someone loves me, I will save him. I will protect those who know me.’“ Psalms 91:14

5th – 7th graders:
“We will speak the truth with love. We will grow up in every way to be like Christ, who is the head. The whole body depends on Christ. And all the parts of the body are joined and held together. Fantastic Parent's Day

Thank you to all who came out to support the Daystar students at Parent's Day. Our school is so blessed to have so many incredible people who support and bless us!

Wednesday, April 5, 2017

Tomorrow is Parent's Day

We are really looking forward to having our parents and friends at school with us tomorrow!  Because we had a snow day yesterday we will also be doing some catching up. It will be nice to have our family see what we do everyday.

Please remember that all weekly assignments and regular quizzes will still be due tomorrow. Reading Plus is due on Sunday night. Oral and final drafts of book reports are also due - these are a very big portion of the student's grades. Please have your student double check that they have met all of the requirements and also help them practice for their oral presentations.

Our quote for today is from Malala Yousafzai, who is the youngest Nobel Peace Prize winner. She was shot in the head by the Taliban because she was a girl trying to get an education, "In some parts of the world, students are going to school every day. It's their normal life. But in other part of the world, we are starving for education... it's like a precious gift. It's like a diamond."

Monday, April 3, 2017

Happy Monday!

This Thursday the students will be presenting their oral reports, along with turning in the final drafts of their written book reports. I have given them a rubric for their oral report. You can also find a copy here: http://www.readwritethink.org/files/resources/lesson_images/lesson416/OralRubric.pdf  Please have your child practice at home. Public speaking is an important tool for their academic and later professional success. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jgLu1dTCpBU. They need to address the main points that were in the paper.

Today we started working on a class book that will be published and available for purchase! WOW! On Thursday, during parent's day, I will hand out the information on how you can purchase one of these awesome books.

Our Bible verses for this week are:
1st-3rd graders -
"Remember that I commanded you to be strong and brave. So don't be afraid. The Lord your God will be with you everywhere you go." Joshua 1:9

5th-7th graders - "God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another. Do you have the gift of speaking? Then speak as though God himself were speaking through you. Do you have the gift of helping others? Do it with all the strength and energy that God supplies. Then everything you do will bring glory to God through Jesus Christ." 1 Peter 4:10-11

Our quote this week is from Nobel Peace Prize winner and concentration camp survivor, Elie Wiesel, "When a person doesn't have gratitude, something is missing in his or her humanity. A person can almost be defined by his or her attitude toward gratitude."
