Thank You!
Thank you to all who came out to support Daystar's Local Hero project at the Center for American Values last night! The students and I felt so loved and supported. Our prayer was that our local heroes would feel extra special and honored by our projects. If you didn't get a chance to come last night, the projects will be up the rest of the week. The center is open until 4:00 pm. Thank you!

will need a permission slip allowing me to drive 5th-7th
grade students to the center. https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100011742484036
Please then have your
child back at the center at 5:50 p.m. dressed in church attire. The event
is supposed to last from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Chimes on Saturday
Please remember that this Saturday students need to be at Pueblo First SDA Church at 10:30 a.m. in their school uniforms for their chime performance.
There will be no spelling words, Spelling City or memory verses next week. We will focus on last-minute preparations for the PBL project on Tuesday evening. 5th-7th graders will have quizzes in their other subjects and everyone will have a math facts quiz on Monday.
Next Thursday we will have a book exchange and a contest to see who can wear the most red, green and white. (No school uniforms)
Our quote for today is from Nick Vujicic (inspirational speaker born without arms or legs), “I have the choice to be angry at God for what I don't have, or be thankful for what I do have.”

Practice Makes Perfect
This week we have had extra practice working on our chimes for Saturday morning. Ms. Nancy is a patient teacher. This is the first time that Daystar has had a chime choir and this Saturday will be the school's very first performance!
Remember that reading packets are due tomorrow!
Our quote for today is from Richard Carlson, “You are what you practice most.”

Papers, Papers, Papers
This is crunch time for our big project, so 5th-7th grade students will need to be working every night until the event on their papers. Remember do not give up - keep running toward the finish line!
Also, reading packets are due on Thursday morning.
For this Sabbath, students need to be at the Pueblo First SDA Church at 10:30 a.m. They will also need to be wearing nice school pants and their school shirt. They will be playing two chime songs that they have been working very hard on.
In science we have been studying electromagnetic waves. Ask your child how a rainbow is made and which color has a longer or shorter wave.
Our quote for today is from John Tesh, "The difference between the people who make it across the finish line and everyone else is one simple thing: an action plan."

Congratulations Daystar Students!
"We are always excited to receive entries from Daystar
Christian School, as your students always do such outstanding work," said Sara Schwartz, Program and Events Manager, Pueblo City-County Library District.
Each of the five, 5th-7th grade students from Daystar, were recently notified that they won awards for the 2016 Youth Creative Writing Contest. Their work was chosen out of more than one hundred entries because of their excellent word choice, plot development, paragraphing, editing and proofreading.
Noah Tivis, Daystar 5th grader exclaimed, "I felt very happy that I was able to achieve this award and win a prize in a writing contest."
Each winner will receive a certificate of achievement, a booklet of all the winning entries and a gift certificate to a local bookstore.
"My students enjoy writing and it is so nice when they are rewarded for their talents and hard work," said Michelle Velbis, principal and head teacher at Daystar Christian School.
Winners from L to R: Bella Kilfoy-2nd place (5th grade), Luke Velbis-3rd place (6th grade), Noah Tivis-3rd place (5th grade), Audra Bennett - 2nd place (6th grade) and Collin Velbis-1st place (7th grade)

Hour of Code is Fun!
Daystar Christian School participated in the Hour
Of Code today, which is being held during Computer Science Education Week. The
annual global campaign is an effort to ensure all students are equipped with
valuable 21st century critical thinking and problem solving skills. I believe
that learning computer programming gives kids important skills to navigate a
future where technology will influence many aspects of their lives. Here is a great video to promote the event: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FC5FbmsH4fw. There is also a link to the website where students can continue their coding education listed in the post below.
Our Bible verses for this week are:
Our quote for today is from George Foreman, "I know from experience that you should never give up on yourself or others, no matter what."
Our Bible verses for this week are:
1st
& 2nd graders:
“But the Lord said to me, ‘My
grace is enough for you. When you are weak, then my power is made perfect in you.’”2
Corinthians 12:9
5th
– 7th graders:
“Stand your ground, putting on the
belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. For shoes, put on the peace that comes
from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared. In
addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows
of the devil. Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of
the Spirit, which is the word of God.” Ephesians 6:14-17Our quote for today is from George Foreman, "I know from experience that you should never give up on yourself or others, no matter what."

Wave Machine
Today we made a wave machine! We were able to see "ripples." Ask your student if the "waves" were longer or shorter when there were more.
In writer's workshop we have started a poetry unit. The students are writing different kinds of poetry and are reading them to the class. We talked about putting feeling and intonation into our voices when we are reading. Today they worked on a Christmas acrostic poem.
Our quote for today is from Bethany Hamilton (shark attack survivor), “Courage doesn't mean you don't get afraid. Courage means you don't let fear stop you.”

Art Pieces for PBL
It was nice to be back at Daystar Christian School with all of my bright-eyed, eager students. Today the students handed in half of their art projects. I wanted to make sure they were working on them. I was so impressed with their creativity.
Some students need to continue to work on theirs - so tomorrow I will be sending home an art rubric to help them understand exactly what they will be graded on. I am putting the pictures of Bella's (5th grade) and Collin's (7th grade) as examples. I thought my first and second graders did a nice job too! Tomorrow I will give the 1st and 2nd graders a rubric on how their tri-folds should look.
All art projects and final drafts (1st and 2nd grader trifolds) will be due on December 12th. Our event is on December 13th from 6:00 to 7:30 pm.
Please remember that on December 8th (5th-7th grade) reading packets are due.
Our Bible verses for the week are:
Our quote for today is from Roger Crawford, “Being challenged in life is inevitable, being defeated is optional.”
