Wave Machine

Today we made a wave machine!  We were able to see "ripples."  Ask your student if the "waves" were longer or shorter when there were more.

In writer's workshop we have started a poetry unit.  The students are writing different kinds of poetry and are reading them to the class. We talked about putting feeling and intonation into our voices when we are reading.  Today they worked on a Christmas acrostic poem.

Our quote for today is from Bethany Hamilton (shark attack survivor), “Courage doesn't mean you don't get afraid. Courage means you don't let fear stop you.”

Art Pieces for PBL

It was nice to be back at Daystar Christian School with all of my bright-eyed, eager students. Today the students handed in half of their art projects. I wanted to make sure they were working on them.  I was so impressed with their creativity.

Some students need to continue to work on theirs - so tomorrow I will be sending home an art rubric to help them understand exactly what they will be graded on. I am putting the pictures of Bella's (5th grade) and Collin's (7th grade) as examples. I thought my first and second graders did a nice job too!  Tomorrow I will give the 1st and 2nd graders a rubric on how their tri-folds should look.

All art projects and final drafts (1st and 2nd grader trifolds) will be due on December 12th. Our event is on December 13th from 6:00 to 7:30 pm.

Please remember that on December 8th (5th-7th grade) reading packets are due.

Our Bible verses for the week are:

1st & 2nd graders:
“The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob spoke to me. He says: I care about you, and I have seen what has happened to you in Egypt.” Exodus 3:17

5th – 7th graders:
“Create in me a new, clean heart, O God, filled with clean thoughts and right desires. Don’t toss me aside, banished forever from your presence. Don’t take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me again the joy of your salvation, and make me willing to obey you.” Psalms 51:10-12

Our quote for today is from Roger Crawford, “Being challenged in life is inevitable, being defeated is optional.”

Food Baskets

Great job to Daystar Students for putting together 10 food baskets to make some local families have a better Thanksgiving!

Students and families enjoy your time off next week and have a wonderful Thanksgiving.  Remember to slow down and enjoy each moment. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GhOUaszMGvQ

Thanksgiving Potluck Tomorrow

Tomorrow we will be making food baskets for the less fortunate in our community. If anyone would like to donate funds or non-perishable food items please drop them off at the school tomorrow.

Tomorrow is our deadline for all interviews. Also students need to study spelling words and memory verses.

Our next deadline is November 28 - which will be the last essay maps and four of the seven art projects are due.

Today, I also sent home letters for the students to give to their local heroes to invite them to our event on December 13th.

Our quote for today is from W. Clement Stone, "If you are really thankful, what do you do? You share."

Day Two of Can Collecting

Thank you to everyone who gave so generously for this year's can collecting. A big thank you to Delbert Hayden and Mike Tivis for also helping to drive.  For only nine students, I think Daystar will be making a big impact on helping our local community members have a better Thanksgiving. It is amazing to see these young people so enthusiastic about helping others.

Please remember that all interviews are due by this Thursday and also bring a dish to share for Thursday potluck.

Our quote for today is from Tom Felton, "Whatever life throws at me I'll take it and be grateful for it as well."

Day One of Can Collecting

Today we put out 300 bags asking for non-perishable food items. Tomorrow we will go back to the same neighborhoods to pick up any donations. Please pray that the people who received the bags today will be generous with their giving. Thank you to Kathy Hayden and Mike Tivis for helping drive today.

I sent home a note with the students to bring a dish to share this Thursday for a potluck lunch. I will provide the drinks and dessert.

Reading packets for 5th-7th graders will be due on December 8th.

The memory verses for this week are:

1st & 2nd graders
“I will praise you, Lord, with all my heart.
I will tell all the miracles you have done.” Psalm 9:1

5th – 7th graders
“Come, let us sing to the Lord!
Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation.
Let us come to him with thanksgiving.
Let us sing psalms of praise to him.
For the Lord is a great God,
a great King above all gods.” Psalm 95:1-3

Our quote for today is from Willie Nelson, "When I started counting my blessings, my whole life turned around."

Preparing for Can Collecting

Today we spent some time getting ready for our neighborhood can collecting. We will go out on Monday, November 14th and deliver bags with notes on them.  Then on Tuesday, November 15th we will go back and collect the bags, which will hopefully have non-perishable food items in them. Please sign and return your child's permission slip.

Today, the 5th-7th graders took their reading tests and received their next reading book and packet. The 5th-7th graders that did not finish the essay part of the test will be responsible to turn that in in the morning. The question is, "What is the theme of the book?" Please write your answer in paragraph form using 3 specific examples from the book.

Next week we will have a science test. Here is a Bill Nye episode that helped to review the concepts we have been studying about sound. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EFpqmdfeMOA

Our quote for today is from Abraham Lincoln, "You cannot escape the responsibility of tomorrow by evading it today."
