Home of Heroes Essay Contest

"Meeting such a valiant man as 'Doc' Ballard was quite a privilege and I was honored that my work was chosen," said Collin Velbis, 6th grader.

"Doc" Donald Ballard, a Hospital Corpsman in the Vietnam War and Medal of Honor winner, was able to present the awards at the "Home of Heroes Essay Contest."  The awards ceremony, which was held at the Rawlings Library in Pueblo, Colorado, on March 16th, was hosted by the Pueblo Home of the Heroes Association Judging Committee.

The 364 entries were split into three categories. Grant and Collin Velbis, students at Daystar Christian School, won honorable mention and second-place respectively, in the middle-school category. Pueblo is going to host the Congressional Medal of Honor Society Annual Convention in September of 2017 with as many as forty Medal of Honor recipients attending. As part of the recognition for winning this essay contest all winners in 2016 and 2017, will be invited to attend a special breakfast during the Convention with all the recipients attending.
"It was inspiring that despite the dire circumstances of being a medic under enemy fire, 'Doc' was able to meet the challenges of saving his fellow men," stated Grant Velbis, 8th grader.

    1. I know! Daystar thanks you for urging the student through your love. I was very proud to behold the students' witness at the awards ceremony. Very thankful we have a Teacher/Principal who motivates our children and then believes that they can make things happens. Daystar Christian School has been a light on a hill for the Pueblo community at the County Library as a result. Agree? Let's keep expressing our faith in their God-given talents.
